A quick note to let you know that I’ve done an overhaul on the site. Mostly it’s under-the-hood stuff (upgrading from HTML4 to HMTL5 was the main reason for doing this, which should improve site function and make it look better on mobile screens). But there are a few more visible differences:
PICTURES. Pictures are good. But this is a text-based site. So I’ve tried make the pictures more visible – but still make them blend in. So you’ll see a lot more thumbnail pictures around the site, but they’re also all muted and toned so that they complement rather than compete with the text.
SEARCH. The site search now uses Google, which gives much better search results than before. The downside is that you might see up to 3 Google ads on the top of your search results page. (They appear in a tinted box labelled ‘Google ads’.) I’m not making any money from these, and I’d actually have to pay Google to stop them from appearing. So please do just ignore them.
YOU LIKE / I LIKE. I thought these might make interesting lists. ‘You like’ is a list of the most viewed articles on the site. Bear in mind that it’s It’s entirely quantitative, so bear in mind it’s not just what you most read, but what web searches most often find. ‘I like’ is the opposite: a list of articles that I think are good, for whatever reason. It’s entirely qualitative, unaffected by views or hits or popularity. This list refreshes so you get a randomly changing selection of articles that ‘I like’ each time you visit a page.
To mark the upgrade, I have just put an article from last year that I, like, really really like. It’s called ‘The Wilderness Within” and it’s from a dance meeting I went to in the northernmost town in the world. You can read it here.
Another treat for you is also in the works – a post about an old dance film that is a bit mind-bending and bit groovy. I hope to get that up in a week or so.
In the meantime, if you come across any glitches introduced by the upgrade that you want to mention, do let me know: info [at] sanjoyroy [dot] net
